Toys for children can be quite expensive. But all people who do not have the necessary means to purchase the latest toy craze for their kids should be reminded: the lack of toys also has its advantages.

The young Canadian inventor Ann Makosinski, who caused a sensation with her invention of a thermoelectric flashlight, is a prime example for the creative superpowers that can be unleashed in children by giving them only a few select of toys to play with. In an interview by the online magazine Innovating Canada Makosinski said about her childhood: “When you have less to play with as a child (and as an adult!), you’re forced to be more creative with whatever resources you do have around.”

In the following, I present you the cardboard toys that were handmade by my nephew, my sister and me. We only used some old cardboard boxes, glue and packing tape, watercolours, pencils, a scissor, a carpet knife and a ruler. The resource saving and inexpensive toys are easy and fun to make for both young and old. The most important thing you need to do, when creating your own toys, is to run your creativity wild!
